Intro. In the effort to mitigate to the soldiers and is family due to a special child, concept of Asha school emerged in 1991. A total of 37 Asha Schools were raised in Mil Stn across India. Its functioning was set out under AWES guidelines in gen like APPS and AWWA provided the vision to it as welfare drive. The focus on newer concepts in Spl Edn/ FDRC trg, fair deg of skills and even eco indep is being attempted with professional trg and motivation to negate the challenges of their disability.
Eligibility :- Children of following personnel will be eligible for admission at the ASHA School.
- Serving Defence Personnel.
- Retired Defence personnel (if vacancies permit).
- Civilians
Admission Criteria :- The following criteria will be adopted for admission of the children.
- The student’s age for admission should be minimum three years and maximum 18 years. However, depending on the physical abilities, mental state and violence quotient, the managing committee may relax the age limit in specific cases.
- The student should be able to perform own toilet activities and movements with minimal assistance or no assistance from an attendant. Children who are unable to sit or are psychiatric or need a constant attendant may be admitted to ASHA school on the condition that mother/attendant would accompany the child with a shorter duration (1-2 hours) of stay and assist in exercises to their own child under the guidance of the physiotherapist. Children who are not toilet trained may be given provisional admission for stipulated period during which an attendant can accompany the child to the school.
- Admission Procedure :-
- All children recommended by the Medical Officer of Command Hospital (Northern Command) will be considered for admission. Any parent applying directly to ASHA School will be required to bring the child with their complete medical history. Children of Army personnel will be given preference for admission over those of ex-servicemen and civilians. Maximum 20% admissions will be provided to civilian needy children after approval by President AWWA.
- The preliminary screening and assessment will be conducted by ASHA School. Final approval for admission of the child will be sought by the Principal from the managing committee.
- The parents would be required to complete the medical examination protocol within one month of admission. The examination would be initiated by the Department of Pediatrics, Command Hospital (Northern Command) and conducted by the Department of Psychiatry. Review medical examination will be done every year and parents will be kept apprised of the same.

The parents/guardians are required to maintain the following documents issued by the school.
- Child Identity Card.
- School Diary.
- Medical Book/Diary.
- The School maintains the following documents :-
- Medical Examination Protocol.
- Medical Record.
- School Leaving/Transfer certificate.
- IEP (Individual Education Programme).
- On transfer/leaving of the student, the above documents will be handed over to the parents/guardians.
